Regardless of your political persuasions, it's looking increasingly likely that the Affordable Care Act is here to stay.
Exhibit A: Last week brought news that Jeb Bush is seriously considering a run for president. And what do he and Hillary Clinton, his likely competitor, have in common beyond the obvious dynastic tendencies? Why, they're both close pals with the Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare, who just happens to be one of the biggest benefactors of the Affordable Care Act.
But we digress.
While much of the polemics surrounding the ACA have ebbed as of late, many Americans remain in the dark about how they can benefit from the legislation. Nonprofits, of course, have played an integral role helping to generate awareness around the ACA. In fact, we're seeing more nonprofits target their message towards specific segments of the arts world.
For example, the MusiCares Foundation exists to assist struggling musicians in need. To that end, its site provides useful information regarding the ACA and lists participating medical providers who offer care to under insured musicians.
Judging by recent news, it appears that deep-pocketed foundations like this approach.
The St. Paul nonprofit Springboard for the Arts will use a recent $800,000 Kresge grant to boost its Artist Access to Healthcare (AAH) program, among other things. The initiative has helped more than 10,000 under-insured artists access health care over the past eight years.
The money comes at a critical juncture because, as we well know, the ACA is far from written in stone. Even if elements of the legislation remain in place once the Republicans take over the House, artists still need to worry about things like open enrollment, selecting plans for the first time, or possibly changing plans if a better alternative is available.
We've explored the labyrinthine process of purchasing insurance through the ACA ourselves. It ended happily, but it was a time-consuming and frustrating process. Kresge is acutely aware of this reality and the fact that artists, traditionally one of the most under insured segments of our population, need help.
The grant will also support Springboard's "Creative Exchange" initiative, "an online platform that shares stories and toolkits to bring artists and communities together," according to a statement from Springboard for the Arts.
In the meantime, the countdown has begun: Only 12 years, two months, and 12 days until Chelsea declares her candidacy!
