NET WORTH: Unknown

SOURCE OF WEALTH: Aerospace Executive (retired)

JEWISH FUNDING AREAS: Jewish Education

OVERVIEW: In 2016, Mordecai Katz and his wife Monique gave a $25 million gift to Yeshiva University, where Katz serves as a vice chairman of the school's board of trustees. Via their M.D. Katz Foundation, established in 1960, the couple is laser-focused on Jewish institutions, particularly institutions of higher learning in the United States and Israel. In a recent year, the Katz Foundation gave away around $3.3 million. This vehicle does not accept unsolicited proposals.

BACKGROUND: Mordecai Katz received degrees in law, engineering and management. He's a former aerospace executive who's lived in Englewood, NJ, for years.

FUNDING PROFILE: In Spring 2016, Yeshiva University in New York received a $25 million gift from Mordecai and Monique Katz to launch The Mordecai D. and Monique C. Katz School of Graduate and Professional Studies. The Katz School will offer a range of degrees in fields including marketing, data science and cybersecurity. Katz serves as a vice chairman of Yeshiva's board of trustees and Monique is vice chairman of Yeshiva's Stern College for Women. As well, Monique graduated the Yeshiva University-affiliated Albert Einstein College of Medicine before going on to work as a radiologist.

Apart from Yeshiva, the couple have been major bankrollers of other Jewish educational institutions. This well-educated family holds more than a dozen graduate degrees between the Katz couple, their children and children's spouses. This might explain why this family focuses so strongly on education. Bar-Ilan University, the second largest institution of higher learning in Israel, has received strong support. Mordecai chairs the board of Bar-Ilan and received an honorary degree from the school. The university is the site of the Mordecai and Monique Katz Interdisciplinary Studies Building, as well as the Mordecai and Monique Katz Information Technology Building. The couple have also supported scholarships and fellowships at the school.

Other Katz Foundation grantees include Frisch Yeshiva High School in Paramus, NJ, SAR Academy Scholarship Fund, and Beit Rabban Day School, among others. SAR Academy is a school in Riverdale, NY. Some of these schools have a personal connection.

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect this couple to focus on Jewish education institutions above all else.
