NET WORTH: Unknown

SOURCE OF WEALTH: American International Industries

JEWISH FUNDING AREAS: Israel, Religious, Education, Community

OVERVIEW: Avi Ryzman and his wife Betty move their philanthropy through the Ryzman Foundation, an under-the-radar charitable vehicle founded in the 1980s. In Israel, the couple has given particularly strong support to hospitals and medical centers. In the states, the family funds religious, education and community organizations in Los Angeles, New York City and elsewhere.

BACKGROUND:  Avi Ryzman attended Yishuv HaChadash high school in Israel and then the Chevron Yeshiva. He enlisted in the Israel Defense Forces, and later earned a degree in political science and economics from Tel Aviv University. Ryzman met his wife Betty in the states and they moved to Los Angeles. Ryzman is the president and CEO of the LA-based American International Industries (AII).

FUNDING PROFILE: Ryzman and Betty, through the Ryzman Foundation, give a few million a year to various Jewish organizations in the United States and Israel. Ryzman is a rabbi, writer and teacher, who received the Jerusalem Prize for Torah Literature. On the education front, the couple gives strong support to Yeshiva Aharon Yaakov-Ohr Eliyahu in the Fairfax district of Los Angeles, and has given more modest support to outfits like Yavneh Hebrew Academy and American Friends of Hebron Yeshiva.

The couple also gives to Chabads, including Chabad of Fairfax, Chabad of the Valley and Chabad Jewish Center of Laguna Beach. While these three outfits are based in Southern California, an important region of philanthropy, they've also given to outfits elsewhere in the country, for example, Chabad of Northwest Arkansas.

Thy Ryzmans also give to religious institutions. They've given especially strong support to religious organizations on the east coast recently, including Congregation Kehal Imrei Shaul in Brooklyn, with smaller support to Congregation Mogen David, Congregation Shaarei Torah and more.

The family also earmarks funds in support of Israel. Grantees have included Central Fund of Israel, American Friends of Laniado Hospital, and American Committee for Shaare Zedek Medical Center. The Ryzmans appear especially interested in health causes in Israel: they dedicated the Zvi and Betty Ryzman Family Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Shaare Zedek.

LOOKING FORWARD: Ryzman and Betty have been steady supporters of the Jewish community for decades. Expect the couple to stick with their established interest areas.
