Lowell Milken

NET WORTH: Unknown

SOURCE OF WEALTH: Drexel Burnham, Knowledge Universe

JEWISH FUNDING AREAS: Education, Cultural, Israel

OVERVIEW: Although he and his brother Michael cofounded the Milken Family Foundation in 1982, Milken decided to found the Lowell Milken Family Foundation in 1986.

BACKGROUND: Born in Southern California, Lowell Milken, a Berkeley and UCLA Law graduate, worked with his older brother Michael Milken at Drexel Burnham. A lifelong advocate of quality education, Lowell went on to found Knowledge Universe, which has become the largest private provider of early childhood education.

FUNDING PROFILE:

EDUCATION: Milken cofounded the Jewish Educator Awards to "support and spotlight K-12 teachers, administrators and other education professionals who are making outstanding contributions to the Jewish and secular education of students in BJE (Builders of Jewish Education)-affiliated day schools across Greater Los Angeles." Via the Lowell Milken Family Foundation, Milken also earmarks funds for Jewish educational outfits. Ariel University in the Israeli settlement of Ariel is a big winner here. Milken has been a steady supporter of the settlement overall. Other grantees have included Jewish Student Union.

CULTURAL:  In 1990, Lowell Milken founded the Milken Archive of Jewish Music, the "largest collection of American Jewish music ever assembled—more than 700 recorded works, including over 500 world premiere recordings." The archive has received tens of millions from the Milken Family Foundation. Lowell Family Foundation grantees have included Keshet Chaim Dance Ensemble; Menachem Begin Heritage Foundation, which supports Menachem Begin, a memorial for a former Prime Minister of Israel; Zionist Organization of America (ZOA); and Jewish Federation. Milken has also supported religious outfits like Stephen S. Wise Temple, a reform synagogue in Los Angeles.

ISRAEL: Milken's support for Israel causes includes outfits in Ariel, as mentioned. Milken has also backed Friends of Israel Defense Forces, Israel Sport Center for the Disabled, and American Friends of Aish HaTorah, among others.

LOOKING FORWARD: While the Milken brothers have many other interests, expect their steady support of the Jewish community to continue. For more on this funder, read our Wall Street Profile of Lowell Milken
