Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation: Grants for College Performing Arts

OVERVIEW: The Geraldine Dodge Foundation supports a variety of New Jersey-based organizations in arts, K-12 education, environment and informed communities. 

IP TAKE: Dodge prefers a broad-based approach to its college arts grantmaking. While colleges and universities are not the primary beneficiaries of Dodge arts grants, several still secure funding each year. Grantseekers should not hesitate to contact Dodge's staff. 

PROFILE: For the past forty years, the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation has almost exclusively funded organizations in New Jersey with a few rare exceptions. The foundation believes that "philanthropy includes not only providing resources, but also connecting leaders across sectors, sharing expertise, and promoting collaboration to help build movements for change around important issues." The foundation funds ArtsEducationEnvironment and Informed Communities initiatives that are innovative and promote collaboration and community-driven decision making

Dodge's arts program seeks to "enrich [lives], bring people together, revitalize public spaces, help communities thrive, and inspire learning." It supports a variety of artistic disciplines, which includes music, opera, theater, dance and visual arts. Dodge is particularly interested in organizations that prioritize arts education programming in its schools. The foundation supports organizations that "pursue and demonstrate the highest standards of artistic excellence in the performing and visual arts; enhance the cultural health and richness of New Jersey communities; inspire learning and understanding; and contribute to our state's creative economy." Its arts-related grantmaking averages between $2,000 and $15,000.

Eligibility for funding, grant guidelines, and application due dates from Dodge vary by program as well as whether a grantseekers is a new applicant or already a grantee.  For first-time grantseekers, the initial step is to fill out an online inquiry form, after which they may be invited to submit a full proposal.
