The Andy Warhol Foundation for Visual Arts (See Andy Warhol Foundation: Grants for Writing, Fine Art) is clear in one of its many messages: "writers should be well paid." By writers, the foundation means all writers, both emerging and established, "whose work addresses contemporary visual art." Now, let's just pause to say the obvious: Not a lot of foundations out there are supporting art writers. The federal food stamps program probably provides more support to arts writers than the foundation sector.
The Warhol gets something very important right. Great writing about visual art is a key part of the arts world. The foundation says that its funding in this area is:
Designed to encourage and reward writing about contemporary art that is rigorous, passionate, eloquent, and precise, as well as to create a broader audience for arts writing, the Arts Writers Grant Program aims to strengthen the field as a whole and to ensure that critical writing remains a valued mode of engaging the visual arts.
Art writers can apply for grants that range from $3,000 to $50,000. Bloggers and new media writers are included and confirmed publishers are not required.
It's important to mention that bloggers and new media writers are included in The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts' grant program because it sometimes seems that for a long time, new media writers were constantly poo-pooed by print media writers. As the Warhol Foundation sees it, the written word, no matter what media, is important and has value.
Of course, the foundation does not exclude print media writers and awards are also granted for magazine features, books, and article writing. The only caveat is that the grantees writing must address contemporary visual arts. The foundation includes architecture, design, film, theater, performance art, music created after World War II as contemporary.
The grant award amounts depend on the project and can range from $3,000 to $50,000, typical awards look like this:
- Article writers - $7,000 to $12,000
- Blogs - $30,000
- Books - $20,000 to $50,000
- New Media - $10,000 to $15,000
- Short-Form - Writing $30,000
The Art Writer's Grants are administered through Creative Capital where grantees are provided the extra administrative, training and networking support they may need to sustain their artistic endeavors and careers. Old-school writers — sharpen your pencils, and new school writers — tighten up your typing skills, because there is no need for you to wait anxiously for an invitation to apply.
The Art Writer's Grant Program holds open calls for submissions every year. Check the website for application details and deadlines.
