On the heels of an Oscar win and a marriage, Matthew McConaughey's Hollywood career and personal life may be shining brighter than ever. The high-profile actor, who has an estimated net worth of $75 million, has turned to philanthropy in the last decade, and established the just keep livin Foundation.
McConaughey adopted "just keep livin" as an approach to deal with the passing of his father, who suffered a heart attack in the early 1990s. While health philanthropy hasn't been a huge priority for Matthew and his wife Camila Alves McConaughey, greater giving may lie ahead in this area.
For now, the couple's just keep livin Foundation focuses on support for inner-city youth. The foundation's mission is "empowering high school students by providing them with the tools to lead active lives and make healthy choices for a better future." A lot of this work focuses on fitness and healthy eating. Currently, the foundation serves more than 2,000 students in 24 schools/sites in California, Louisiana, Texas and Washington D.C.
The foundation has partnered with other nonprofit organizations to implement after-school fitness and wellness programs in inner-city high schools. One significant grantee in this area is Communities in the Schools (CIS), "a nonprofit dropout prevention organization." Grants have helped to implement fitness and wellness programs in large, inner-city high schools.
The foundation has supported after-school and weekend programs such as the Brees Dream Foundation, which provides "after-school fitness and wellness programs in the New Orleans." It has also funded charter schools, such as New Orleans-based Warren Easton Charter High School and Lusher Charter School, and Los Angeles-based Green Dot Public Schools.
The couple has also supported college and career readiness. One grantee in this area is Step Up Women's Network, which helps girls in under-resourced communities "to fulfill their potential by empowering them to become confident, college-bound, career-focused, and ready to join the next generation of professional women." A steady stream of money has flowed to Boys & Girls Clubs of Austin. In general, McConaughey's home state of Texas is a region to keep an eye on.
just keep livin has an active website that provides a short list of staff, including Managing Director Erica Helwick. Another staff member, meanwhile, used to work with Green Dot Public Schools. Unfortunately, no clear grant guidelines are available on the foundation's website, though a contact page is provided.
