Digital Defenders Partnership: Grants for Human Rights

OVERVIEW: The Digital Defenders Partnership funds individuals and organizations that seek to maintain internet freedom.

IP TAKE: This funder does not support projects that concern general internet freedom policy or general digital security training.

PROFILE: The Digital Defenders Partnership (DDP) was formed in 2012 by the Freedom Online Coalition to “advance internet freedom and to keep the internet open and free from emerging threats, specifically in internet repressive and transitional environments.” DDP currently operates out of the international NGO, Hivos International. The partnership supports a variety of groups including bloggers, cyber activists, human rights defenders, journalists, and civil society activists.

DDPs Incidental Emergency grants program offers financial emergency assistance to activists facing “an urgent digital emergency” due to their online activities. Grantees may use DDPs emergency funding for a diverse set of projects and activities ranging from finding legal representation to digital security audits. Although the partnership does not list its grantees by name for safety concerns, it offers a list of projects it has supported in the past.

DDP award emergency grants for up to €10,000 for a period of up to four months. The grantmaking process takes up to two weeks.  While grantseekers from across the globe may apply for an Incidental Emergency grant, they are not eligible for support if their projects do not focus on internet repressive contexts.

This funder also has two other grantmaking programs, which are accepting applications or requests for funding at this time. The Sustainable Emergency grants program supports projects in internet repressive and transitional countries only. Grants range from €10,000 to €50,000. DDPs Capacity Building grant program supports NGOs, media organizations, and human rights defenders. Grants range from €20,000 to €250,000. This program is expected to run through the end of 2019.
