Appleton Foundation: Grants for Global Security

OVERVIEW: Appleton focuses its global security grantmaking on supporting peacebuilding movements in Latin America. The foundation also awards grants to organizations fighting for the rights of indigenous and marginalized populations in this region.

IP TAKE: This foundation focuses heavily on peacebuilding and human rights. Grantseekers conducting work where these two causes intersect may have a good chance at obtaining funding from Appleton.

PROFILE: Based in Santa Cruz, California, the Appleton Foundation's (not to be confused with the Toronto-based Appleton Charitable Foundation) primary international grantmaking interests include both global security and human rights. In the global security space, Appleton focuses its grantmaking energies on peacebuilding movements rather than other matters of global security, such as nonproliferation or cybersecurity. In the human rights space, the foundation centers much of its grantmaking on the rights of indigenous people and marginalized populations in Latin America.

The foundation's human rights grantmaking is relatively modest and ranges from about $10,000 to $30,000, and prioritizes United States and Latin America-based organizations. Tax filings reveal that smaller and grassroots organizations secure funding most often, but this funder also supports a few larger, international organizations.

In keeping with a low public profile, Appleton does not operate a website, which makes it one of the less approachable global security and human rights funders out there. However, this funder does have a paid staff, so several points of contact exist for potential grantseekers.

The foundation does not accept unsolicited proposals, and instead, makes contributions to organizations it selects on its own. However, that does not mean that grantseekers should shy away from approaching this funder. A handful of new grantees do make it on the Appleton’s grants roster each year.
