Schooner Foundation: Grants for Human Rights

OVERVIEW: Schooner’s global rights grantmaking focuses on a wide range of rights causes from the local level all the way up to the international level.

IP TAKE: This funder tends to support the same rights organizations each year; however, it awards grants for general operating support and project-specific support.

PROFILE: Funded by the investment firm Schooner Capital, the Schooner Foundation has been been making grants since the mid-1990s. Internationally, the foundation focuses its attention on human rights, peace and security, and economic opportunity. The foundation’s single-page website describes Schooner as a “[p]rogressive foundation” that seeks to “[h]onor human dignity.” Although this does not offer grantseekers much insight into which issues it prioritizes, the foundation’s tax filings indicates a funding interest in the human rights space. Schooner awards grants to small and grassroots organizations on a small scale.

Grant amounts vary widely, from a low of $500 to over $2 million. Most grants, however, fall between $10,000 and $100,000. Larger international organizations tend to receive the bigger grants. Types of organizations Schooner supports include Fund for Global Human Rights, Global Greengrants Fund and International Justice Mission.

Schooner does not accept unsolicited grant applications or requests for funding.
