International Peace Research Association

OVERVIEW: The International Peace Research Association awards modest grants to individuals conducting research to advance peacebuilding and eliminate root causes of war and violence.

IP TAKE: This is a good funder to keep in mind for individual peace researchers undertaking small projects.

PROFILE: The International Peace Research Association Foundation (IPRA) was established in 1990 as an extension of the International Peace Research Association. The IPRA Foundation awards small grants to groups that study “[c]onflict phenomena and peace strategies” in an effort to determine how to advance peacebuilding and eliminate the root causes of violence.

IPRAs Peace Research grants offer up to $5,000 to support research projects in a range of countries, including the U.S., Germany, India, Nigeria, Palestine and the Philippines. Grants are awarded to individuals rather than organizations or academic institutions. Peace Research grants are awarded to advance "[i]nterdisciplinary research into the conditions of peace and the causes of war and other forms of violence. Peace research is distinguished by its attention to systematic observation or study of conflict phenomena and peace strategies." The IPRA is particularly interested in global security projects that "[i]nvestigate how the conditions of peace can be advanced and/or the causes of war and other forms of violence be addressed, including their effects on people and society." In addition, the association also offers two biennial fellowships of $5,000 to help women in least-developed countries advance their studies in peace.

This foundation is a good resource for grantees seeking modest grants. Since past grantees are not eligible for multiple grants, the grantmaking slate is essentially wiped clean each year. In addition, IPRA accepts unsolicited grant applications and requests for funding, but grants do not support general operating and administrative costs. Peace Research grants may be submitted twice annually by February 28 and August 31 .
