Holthues Trust

OVERVIEW: Human rights grantmaking at Holthues supports a general range of human rights causes.

IP TAKE: This is not the most approachable funder, and its limited staff makes it more difficult for new grantseekers to get in touch with them. However, Holthues has a history of supporting the same organizations year after year, so securing a grant from the trust may lead to a long-term funding relationship.

PROFILE: Holthues Trust has $29 million to $31 million in assets, but annual grantmaking remains relatively modest at about $1 million to $1.5 million. Holthues’ human rights-related grantmaking is relatively diverse, and tends to address human rights in general. In the past, the trust has supported the Center for Victims of Torture’s New Tactics in Human Rights program, and the AMCAV project, which works to protect the rights of female rape victims in Africa. The trust also awards occasional grants to nonviolence and peacebuilding organizations.

Since the trust does not maintain a website or formal staff, it may be difficult for small and grassroots organizations to get in touch; however, once an organization manages to secure funding, the trust entertains multiple-year grants. Although this narrows the foundation's giving pool to new grantseekers, grantseekers are still advised to introduce themselves to the trust. Grant amounts usually range from $10,000 to $50,000.

This is funder does not accept unsolicited grant applications or requests for funding.
