Stephen & Margaret Gill Family Foundation: Grants for Northern California

OVERVIEW:  The Stephen & Margaret Gill Family Foundation invests in the arts and the environment.

IP TAKE: The foundation keeps a low public profile, which limits information available on its grantmaking priorities and activities.

FUNDING AREAS: Environment and civil rights, arts and culture, global, education and youth, religious

PROFILE: Established in 1999, the Stephen and Margaret Gill Family Foundation is steered by tech mogul Stephen Gill and his wife Margaret. Margaret, a longtime lawyer, serves as a vice chair of San Francisco Ballet Association and on the president’s council of United Religions Initiative (URI), “a global grassroots interfaith network that cultivates peace and justice by engaging people to bridge religious and cultural differences and work together for the good of their communities and the world.” The couple’s daughter, meanwhile, is a lawyer for the ACLU.

According to tax filings, the Stephen & Margaret Gill Family Foundation’s grantmaking supports the arts and the environment. Unfortunately, the foundation does not maintain a public profile, so it is unclear what it prioritizes within its giving areas.

Gill grants range from about $500 to $50,000.  Past grantees include Asian Law Caucus, San Francisco Ballet, San Francisco Opera, GSA Network, and Episcopal Community Services. Learn more about past grantees in the funder’s tax records.

It does not appear that this foundation accepts unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits.
