OVERVIEW: This funder prioritizes youth development through sports and the arts. It has given extensively to organizations in San Francisco and throughout the Bay Area, but also nationwide and in Europe.
FUNDING AREAS: At-risk youth, youth sports, youth arts, economic security, English as second language, out-of-classroom education
IP TAKE: Email the foundation with an out-of-classroom education program that gets kids involved in sports or the arts. The Rising Stars program is the prominent funding opportunity here.
PROFILE: StubHub is an international ticket marketplace that allows fans to buy and sell tickets to entertainment and sporting events, essentially reinventing the ticket resale market in 2000. The StubHub Foundation is a corporate-advised fund of the Silicon Valley Community Foundation. Like SVCF, StubHub Foundation tends to favor organizations in its own backyard of San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. However, it is committed to investing in the communities it operates in, which are all across the U.S. and even in Europe.
Common areas of support include economic security, English learning for immigrants, and out-of-classroom education. One big priority is its Rising Stars program, which supports arts and sports participation for at-risk youth. This program was launched in early 2013 with an initial $125,000 in support going to local arts and sports nonprofits in New Orleans. Rising Stars grants range from $25,000 and $100,000, and recipients also receive pro bono resources through fundraising opportunities and employee service projects.
Unfortunately for grantseekers, the Rising Stars program accepts grant applications by invitation only. However, nonprofits that are working in the areas of youth development through sports and art are encouraged to send details about their organization and programs to the corporate responsibility team for consideration. These details should include your organization’s name, address and mission, in 100 words or less, and a response to the question, “How is your organization improving the lives of young people through arts or recreational opportunities?” in 150 words or less.
In its first three years, StubHub Foundation committed over $2 million to the Rising Stars program and other charitable causes. Due to its business background in event planning, the foundation also helps support fundraising activities for nonprofits. Check out the Nonprofit Box Office page to learn about free services StubHub offers to grassroots nonprofits.
In addition to the above causes, StubHub also supports some disaster relief efforts and efforts to improve the health and wellness of its employees and their families and communities. This giving is channeled through StubHub’s Give-and-Go program, as well as through the StubHub Foundation. Past grantees include Mr. Holland’s Opus foundation, the American Heart Association, the San Francisco Symphony, Dress for Success San Francisco, and Autism Speaks.
The San Francisco Bay Area is definitely central on StubHub’s radar, but keep in mind that it has also recently supported groups in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Nashville, New Orleans, Dublin, and London. StubHub’s corporate office is located at 199 Freemont Street, Floor 4, in San Francisco. General inquiries can be directed to the StubHub Foundation staff at firstname.lastname@example.org.
