Koret Foundation: Grants for the Bay Area

OVERVIEW: The Koret Foundation engages in grantmaking in areas such as education, arts and culture, and Jewish causes. Most of its funding stays in the Bay Area.

FUNDING AREAS: Jewish causes, Bay Area community, education, poverty

IP TAKE: Though a huge funder of Jewish causes, some of its largest sums in recent years have gone toward its Bay Area Anchor Institutions Program, which focuses on culture, civic organizations and education.

PROFILE: Established in 1979, the Koret Foundation was seeded with the estates of Joseph and Stephanie Koret, whose Koret of California sportswear line was a leader in women's fashion. Grantmaking areas of interest include Jewish causes, Bay Area community, education, and poverty.

Higher education grants support access to education and student success, as well as career advancement. K-12 education grants are focused on the Bay Area through youth development, overcoming barriers to success, and future planning. Arts and culture grants are focused on stabilizing Bay Area institutions and expanding access to the arts. The funder also supports special projects that make the Bay Area a more livable and diverse place to live. Koret also supports many Jewish community efforts in the Bay Area, Israel, Poland, and globally. Past support has gone to the California Historical Society, the Corporation of the Fine Arts Museum, Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University, Citizen Schools, and the San Francisco Food Bank.

Foundation grants often range from $25,000 to $350,000. Learn more about local giving by browsing the funder’s grantee stories page. Overall, grantmaking is focused on the San Francisco Bay Area. However, the funder’s Jewish giving has a broader geographic reach.

The Koret Foundation does not accept unsolicited grant requests and consider proposals by invitation only. However, nonprofits can submit an online form to inform the foundation about their work. Grantseekers can direct general questions to the foundation staff via that same online form or by phone at 415-882-7740.
