PROFILE: Established in 1994, the Krause Foundation was founded by technology mogul Bill Krause and his wife, Gay. Bill spent 14 years at Hewlett-Packard, where he became general manager of the general systems division. Krause was president and CEO of 3Com Corporation, and since 1991 has been president of LWK Ventures, a private investment firm. Gay is a former teacher, counselor and middle school principal, and she serves as executive director of the Krause Center for Innovation –Foothill College. The Krause Foundation’s grantmaking seeks to provide grants to organizations creating systemic change in education and youth development. Grantmaking centers on education, youth, and healthcare.

Grants for STEM Education and Community Development

The foundation does not have a website to guide grantseekers. However, Krause has strongly supported his alma mater, the Citadel, in Charleston, South Carolina, home to the Krause Center for Leadership & Ethics, which was created in 2001. The Krauses have also steadily supported Foothill and De Anza community colleges and gave $3.5 million in unrestricted funding for the Foothill De Anza Community College District in 2013. The couple has also supported Gay’s alma mater, Pennsylvania State University.

Other grantees include Mentor Tutor Connection, the YMCA of Silicon Valley, the Silicon Valley Education Foundation, Teen Success, the Tech Museum of Innovation, and the Computer History Museum. The foundation typically awards grants in the form of general operating support.

Grants for Public Health and Access

The foundation’s support for healthcare is not as robust as its support for education, but it has given to a number of organizations over the years. It has given over $300,000 to the Palo Alto Medical Foundation and at least $100,000 the Community Health Awareness Council of Mountain View, California. It has also supported the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation and Mission Hospice & Home Care in San Mateo, California.
