PROFILE: Established in 1979, the Women's Foundation of California (WFC) is a publicly supported foundation based in Oakland, California. San Francisco-based founders created WFC as one of the first foundations led by and for women and girls in the U.S. The foundation is "dedicated to achieving racial, economic and gender justice by centering the experience and expertise of communities most impacted by systemic injustice.” WFC funds local efforts for economic security, health and safety.

The Women's Foundation of California almost exclusively supports organizations that serve women, girls and trans people of color. Many of its grantees are organizations led by women of color. WFC commonly supports organizations that address pay equity, workplace protections, affordable childcare, criminal justice reform, reproductive justice and environmental justice. It often makes grants for general operating support but also awards project-based support to its grantees. Meanwhile, WFC’s Women’s Policy Institute is a fellowship program that trains grassroots community leaders about policy processes at the state and local levels.

Grants range between about $10,000 and $50,000. Learn more about this funder’s local giving by examining its recent tax records. Grantmaking focuses on the entire state of California. Past local grantees include ACT for Women and Girls, California Latinas for Reproductive Justice and the Community Water Center.

This foundation does not accept unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits and awards grants on an invitation-only basis. WFC makes grants on a rolling basis during the year. Direct general questions to the staff at 510-740-2500.
