PROFILE: With a history that dates back to 1937, the Monterey Peninsula Foundation (MPF) is a California grantmaker with a regional focus. This foundation aims to “enhance the quality of life in Monterey County and surrounding areas through the strategic disbursement of charitable funds generated by hosting the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the PURE Insurance Championship.” Grantmaking interests include arts and culture, community and environment, education, health and human services, and youth.

The golf events that help this group raise money for its grantmaking are the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am PGA Tour and the PURE Insurance Championship. Arts and culture grants foster creative environments, and community and environment grants support collaborations and partnerships. Equity in access to quality education, starting with early childhood education, is important to this funder. Health and human services grants to towards wellness programs for the mind, body, and spirit, and youth grants boost individual potential and build resiliency. The funder provides general operating support, program support, and capital support. MPF also funds K-12 public schools in the region, with individual schools able to request up to $30,000 and school districts up to $400,000 per year.

Organizations must generally be located in Monterey, Santa Cruz, or San Benito counties to apply for grants. But MPF is open to groups located elsewhere that serve this tri-county region. On average, the foundation receives about 225 grant applications each year and supports about 175. Grants are typically made for a one-year period; however, multi-year support is considered.

The funder accepts grant applications throughout the year and reviewed quarterly. Submit an application by January 1 for review in March, by April 1 for review in June, by July 1 for review in September, or by October 1 for review in December.
