OVERVIEW: The Motorola Solutions Foundation centers its grantmaking on preparing first responders and public disaster education campaigns.
IP TAKE: The foundation often gives preference to groups with which employees are involved; however, grantseekers are advised to develop a relationship with Motorola by reaching out.
PROFILE: The Motorola Solutions Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Motorola Solutions. This large, multinational company has a strong global presence. The foundation's charitable efforts predominantly operate where its sister corporation is located; however, the foundation also partners with major humanitarian organizations to provide disaster support and relief to both victims and emergency workers.
In contrast to other foundations, Motorola Solutions focuses more on funding disaster preparation rather than immediate relief efforts. The Motorola Solutions Foundation’s Public Safety Programs awards grants to groups that provide professional development and training for first responders; disaster safety and preparedness programs for the public; outreach and educational programs for young people interested in public service careers; support for families of fallen first responders and issues affecting first responder communities.
In the U.S., Motorola prioritizes about 10 metro regions. Although the foundation does not restrict its funding at the international level, it does prioritize projects or programs in which Motorola employees are involved.
The Motorola Solutions Foundation accepts unsolicited grant applications for its International program. Inquiry requests must be submitted by February 24, but the date is subject to change. Grantees are generally notified in mid-April whether they may submit a formal online application, which can generally be submitted in mid-May. Grant decisions are announced in mid-July.
