Michelin Corporate Foundation: Grants for Climate Change

OVERVIEW: The Michelin Corporate Foundation supports a wide range of climate change projects and organizations. It does not restrict its funding to one particular climate change issue.

IP TAKE: The foundation awards grants to organizations around the world where Michelin has a business and employee presence.

PROFILE: Established in 2014, the Michelin Corporate Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the Michelin Group. The foundation operates under its “[s]ignature theme” of “[h]elping people move forward.” Main grantmaking programs include Sustainable Mobility, Sport and Health, Education and the Community, Protecting the Environment and Heritage and the Arts.

Michelin does not have a dedicated climate change grantmaking program specifically; however, it awards related grants through its broadly defined Protecting the Environment program. This program supports organizations addressing “[f]undamental challenges for the future of our planet,” and those which focus on the “[f]ight against global warming, the renewing of energies, the preservation of resources and biodiversity.”

Climate change and energy grants range from a few thousand to tens of thousands of dollars. Past climate change grantees include the International Study Group on Chemical Pollution of the Environment, which received funding for its work addressing the chemical industry’s impact on health and the environment; and Climate Chance, which received a grant for its work on the implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement. The Michelin Corporate Foundation accepts unsolicited requests for funding via its website.
