Capezio Foundation: Grants for Dance

OVERVIEW: Capezio backs groups that increase awareness and appreciation for dance and encourage new and emerging talents.

IP TAKE: This is a very accessible grantmaker that accepts unsolicited applications. Given the modest size of its grants, this funder may be best suited for smaller and local organizations.

PROFILE: The Capezio Foundation's mission is to create "greater awareness and appreciation of dance as an art form,” and to “recognize the accomplishments of the present and encourage new or emerging talents, trends and practices.” Originally funded by Capezio Inc., the foundation is now supported by Ballet Makers Inc., a manufacturer and distributor of Capezio brand products.

Capezio backs nonprofit organizations that have a significant impact on dance and that promote its value in all forms, including ballet, modern, jazz, and tap, among others. The foundation does not award grants to individual dance companies, individual dancers, choreographers, dance schools, or dance teachers. It funds both specific projects as well as applications for general operating support.

The Capezio Foundation is a small organization with limited resources. The majority of grants awarded are relatively modest, ranging from $500 to $1,000.

Capezio accepts unsolicited grant applications throughout the year. Applications must be received by April 1 to be considered for funding in the current grant cycle. Grants are typically awarded by June 30.

In addition to its grantmaking, the foundation also offers an annual $10,000 award to individuals, dance companies, or institutions.
