Schooner Foundation: Grants for Journalism

OVERVIEW: The Schooner Foundation’s grants focus on progressive media, politics, and campaign finance reform.

PROFILE: Established in 1996, the Schooner Foundation (formerly the Ryan Family Charitable Foundation) currently supports its grantmaking through the use of profits earned by the investment firm, Schooner Capital. Based in Boston, Schooner is a “[p]rogressive foundation focused internationally on human rights, peace & security and economic issues.” In the United States, the foundation focuses its grantmaking on “[p]rogressive media, campaign finance reform, the green economy, investigative reporting, and judicial reform.”

Schooner’s grant amounts range widely from $5,000 to $500,000; however, most grants fall in the $25,000 to $100,000 range. Past journalism grantees include New Media Ventures, which received a grant for general operating support; and The Progressive, which also received a grant for general operating support.
