OVERVIEW: Arts Writers grants support established and emerging writers and journalists who write about visual art.
IP TAKE: This is a very specialized funder that will consider applications for interdisciplinary work in other fields, such as architecture, dance, film, media, music, performance, theater, only if contemporary visual art is the project’s primary focus. As a result, it funds journalism only related to the arts and art news.
PROFILE: Arts Writers supports arts writers and seeks to recognize their contribution to the arts field. It is funded by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and Creative Capital. It supports journalism about the visual arts with a grants program and writing workshops.
The Arts Writers Grant supports writers whose work "addresses contemporary visual art," particularly those who write directly about and promote contemporary works of visual art. The breakdown of grant amounts for various areas is $15,000 to article writers, $30,000 for blogs, $50,000 for books, $15,000 for new media, and $30,000 for short-form writing. Application requirements differ with each category.
Applicants must be an art historian, artist, critic, curator, journalist, or writer. The Arts Writers grant program only supports individuals; it does not fund organizations. It only funds projects about contemporary visual art (ie. visual art produced after WWII). New grant seekers should consult the general application guidelines, the application checklist, and the writing sample instructions before applying. View FAQs here and a list of past grantees here.
The Writing Workshop is open to all grant program applicants not selected as a finalist for the grant program. It partners ten arts writers with critics from the International Association of Art Critics to “strengthen their writing through one-on-one consultations […] over a six-month period.” After checking the appropriate box on the grants program application, applicants are automatically considered for the workshop.
