Brian A. McCarthy Foundation: Grants for LGBTQ

OVERVIEW:  The Brian A. McCarthy Foundation invests in LGBTQ health, education, culture, and well-being with an emphasis on HIV research and prevention, as well as housing and anti-violence programs for LGBTQ youth.

PROFILE: Founded in 2007, the Brian A. McCarthy Foundation is an outgrowth of the former Michael McCarthy W. Foundation, which was established in 1958 in by Michael W. McCarthy, a former chairman of the board of Merrill Lynch. Brian A. McCarthy serves as the sole trustee of the Brian A. McCarthy Foundation, which prefers a relatively low profile despite overseeing a website. The foundation seeks to “primarily support gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender health, education, culture, and well-being with a special emphasis on HIV prevention and research, and programs for LGBT youth.”

While the foundation does not maintain targeted programs through which to conduct grantmaking, it broadly invests in a variety of LGBTQ issues. Its past grantees have addressed  HIV research and prevention, housing and anti-violence programs for LGBTQ youth, among many other interests.

Grants range from $5000 to $50,000. In 2017, the McCarthy Foundation gave away $415,000 to nine grantees including Global Action Project and its SupaFriends LGBTQ youth media program; Black, Gifted, & Whole Foundation's HBCU Ambassador Scholarship Program, to “create a pipeline for black gay/queer students into the workforce”; and amfAR. The foundation can fund general operating expenses, research, and project support. In general, McCarthy does not make recurring grants or make any contribution commitment longer than a calendar year to any organization.

While the Brian A McCarthy Foundation does not accept unsolicited grant applications, it welcomes introductions and information on organizations with similar goals.
