COIL Foundation: Grants for LGBTQ

OVERVIEW: The COIL Foundation supports LGBTQ organizations around the country.

IP TAKE: This is a fairly accessible funder that awards a number of grants each year.

PROFILE: Based in San Francisco, California, the COIL Foundation supports organizations helping to “[e]liminate prejudice and discrimination against LGBT people” and those that “[p]romote their well-being through emotional, intellectual and spiritual growth.”

COIL is a small operation with Peter Drake serving as the executive director and Jared Moreno serving as the director of the foundation. After spending many years in a “long straight marriage,” Peter came out in 2009 and recently married Jared Moreno.

COIL makes discretionary donations ranging from $100 to $1,000 and grants or “larger gifts” from $1,000 to a maximum of $25,000. Focusing exclusively on the LGBTQ community, past COIL grantees include Soulforce, which received funding for its work countering Reparative Therapy Practices; and Faith in America, which received a grant to help create a website to “[m]eet the pressing need of LGBT youth. COIL accepts unsolicited letters of inquiry. Should the applicant’s work align with the foundation’s goals, COIL may request a formal proposal.
