David A. Dechman Foundation: Grants for LGBTQ

OVERVIEW: The David A. Dechman Foundation is a broad supporter of LGBTQ causes around the United States though it does not name specific strategies in this area of grantmaking.

IP TAKE: This organization funds smaller, grassroots organizations as well as larger LGBTQ institutions. Unfortunately, it lacks transparency and does not maintain a website restricting information available about its grantmaking strategies or interests.

PROFILE: David Dechman earned his wealth working on Wall Street first at Goldman Sachs and then through Summit Rock Advisors, an investment firm he cofounded. During his time at Goldman Sachs, Dechman served as one of the founding trustees of the Goldman Sachs Foundation. In 2010, Dechman established the David A. Dechman Foundation. The Dechman Foundation maintains a low public profile. It also does not operate a website or employ a paid staff. According to tax filings, the foundation’s funding includes arts & culture, LGBTQ causes, education, health and human services.

In the LGBTQ funding space, Dechman was among the first supporters of the Gay Lesbian and Straight Education Network or GLSEN. Past Dechman grantees include the Gill Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to security equal rights for LGBTQ people, and the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), an organization fighting for LGBTQ acceptance.

The Dechman Foundation awards grants of upwards of $500,000; however, the majority of grants fall in the $10,000 to $50,000 range. The foundation does not accept unsolicited grant applications or requests for funding.
