Digital Defenders Partnership: Grants for LGBTQ

OVERVIEW: Digital Defenders Partnership focuses its grantmaking on protecting human rights defenders and human rights organizations in the digital space.

IP TAKE: Grantmaking from this funder covers a variety of activities ranging from security training to protecting activists who have come under threat due to their online activities.

PROFILE: Established in 2012 by the Freedom Online Coalitions, the Digital Defenders Partnership (DDP) aims to “[p]rotect and advance internet freedom and to keep the internet free from emerging threats, specifically in repressive environments.” DDP also provides emergency support grants for “[i]ndividuals such as human rights defenders, journalists, civil society activists and bloggers.” DDP’s main grantmaking programs include Incidental Emergency grants, Sustainable Emergency Grants and Capacity Building grants.

DDP awards Incidental Emergency grants in response to urgent needs, for example human rights defenders under threat or the loss of sensitive data and equipment. Incidental Emergency grants are limited to a maximum of €10,000 and are awarded for up to four months.

Sustainable Emergency grants offer support for those facing digital emergencies such as securing internet infrastructure or secure data storage. Grants from this program range from €10,000 to €50,000 for up to one year.

DDP’s Capacity Building grant program supports projects that help strengthen an organizations emergency response capacity, offer personal protection from those under threat and “[o]ther strategic investments in the digital response emergency sector.” Grants for this program range from €00,000 €250,000.

This funder does not have a program directed at the LGBTQ community; however, it “[p]articularly encourage(s) women and women’s organizations, ethnic minorities and LGBTI+ persons to apply,” for grants.

DDP accepts unsolicited grant applications and requests for funding on a rolling basis.
