OVERVIEW: The Laughing Gull Foundation supports LGBTQ organizations combating discrimination and oppression of LGBTQ people in the southern U.S.
IP TAKE: Laughing Gull typically funds local and grassroots organizations rather than large and national organizations.
PROFILE: The Laughing Gull Foundation describes itself as a “progressive family foundation rooted in the U.S. South.” The foundation ultimately seeks to leverage its resources in order “to transform systems, institutions, and relationships for the benefit of people and the planet [by] proactively addressing broken systems that have created inequality and harmed our planet.” It funds environmental justice, higher education in prison, and LGBTQ issues.
Launched in 2013, the foundation’s LGBTQ equality program supports communities in the southern U.S. with a particular focus on those located in Virginia and North Carolina. Laughing Gull grants have supported a wide range of LGBTQ projects and initiatives rooted in equal rights, justice and combatting oppression and homophobia.
Most Laughing Gull grants range from $10,000 to $50,000. Examples of past grantees include the Campaign for Southern Equality and the Horizons Foundation. To learn more about the types of organizations this funder supports, explore its LGBTQ grants list.
The foundation does not accept unsolicited grant applications or requests for funding. However, organizations with work that falls within the foundation’s funding priorities are welcome to send a one page introductory letter to Laughing Gull staff members.
