Ehrenkranz Family Foundation: Grants for Visual Arts

OVERVIEW: The Ehrenkranz Family Foundation is the philanthropic vehicle of art collecting couple Joel and Anne Ehrenkranz. The couple's arts philanthropy focuses largely on New York City, with a bent towards photography and contemporary art.

IP TAKE: The foundation does not appear to accept unsolicited proposals and keeps a low profile. Grantmaking often tracks with board memberships and personal connections, making networking especially important.

PROFILE: The Ehrenkranz Family Foundation was founded in 1997 by Joel and Anne Ehrenkranz. Joel cofounded and currently serves as a senior partner of both Ehrenkranz Partners L.P. and Ehrenkranz & Ehrenkranz LLP. Anne, meanwhile, is an art historian, photographer, and author of books on photography.

The couple's philanthropy is mostly gleaned from 990 tax forms for their family foundation, as their charitable vehicle keeps a low-profile and has a minimal web presence. What's clear, though, is that the family has a particular interest in supporting arts and cultural institutions in New York City. Joel and Anne Ehrenkranz have been on ARTnews' top 200 art collectors list several times, in the collecting area of contemporary art. Meanwhile, Anne's strong interest in photography also spurs some of the family's giving.

Some of the couple's most significant work has taken place at the Whitney Museum, where they have endowed a curatorship. Joel once served as president of the Whitney. MoMA, meanwhile, is the site of the Joel and Anne Ehrenkranz Chief Curator of Photography. Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts is another important grantee. Joel is a vice chair at the institution.

Other grantees have included International Center of Photography, International Print Center, PS1 Contemporary Arts Center, Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts in Katonah, Museum of City of New York, and more. Outside of the visual arts, the couple also supports performing arts and music, too.

In a recent fiscal year, the Ehrenkranz Family Foundation gave away around $5.6 million. Arts grants tend to be larger than some of the other areas the couple supports, with a few grants exceeding a million annually of late.
