Royce Family Fund: Grants for the Arts

OVERVIEW: The Royce Family Fund's arts grantmaking includes supporting film, museums, and performing arts centers. Preservation is also very important to this funder.

IP TAKE: The charity keeps a low-profile and does not appear to accept unsolicited proposals. Grantseekers working in Connecticut and New York, both in the city and upstate, are within this charity's grantmaking orbit.

PROFILE: Charles M. Royce has amassed wealth at the helm of Royce & Associates. The family's philanthropy focuses on the Northeast, particularly Connecticut and New York. Sure, New York City outfits get love. But this funder also has an eye on upstate New York, for instance in the Catskill region.

Arts is a strong interest of this funder. Royce's wife Deborah Goodrich Royce is a longtime actress and filmmaker on both coasts who once worked as a story editor for Miramax. These days, she's strongly involved with the Avon Theatre Film Center in Stamford, where she served as vice president for more than a decade, and recently assumed the role of president. The Royces actually helped restore the Avon last decade and strongly continue to support Avon via their Royce Family Fund. Other film grantees include Film Society of Lincoln Center.

The Royces also earmark funds for the visual arts. Grantees have included the Museum of Modern Art, the Met, and the Frick Collection, where Royce serves as a trustee. Preservation and historic sites are also important to this family. They've supported, for instance, Flagler Museum in Palm Beach,  a 55-room mansion rooted in the Gilded Age, and Greenwich Historical Society. Last decade, the Royces purchased the historic Ocean House, a Victorian hotel in Rhode Island, slated for demolition, and rebuilt the structure.

The family also seems to have an interest in music, and has supported places like New York Philharmonic and Kingston Chamber Music Festival.

In a recent tax year, the Royce Family Fund gave away around $5.4 million. Quite a few grants are under $50,000, spread across a range of nonprofits. Unfortunately, because the charity keeps a low profile, a description of exactly what the Royces look for in their arts grantees is hard to come by.
