Royce Family Fund: Grants for the Arts

OVERVIEW: The Royce Family Fund's arts grantmaking includes supporting film, museums, and performing arts centers. Preservation is also very important to this funder. The foundation does not have a website and provides no clear guidelines for grant seekers.

IP TAKE: The charity keeps a low-profile and does not appear to accept unsolicited proposals. Grant seekers working in Connecticut and New York, both in the city and upstate, are within this charity's grantmaking orbit.

PROFILE: Charles M. Royce has amassed wealth at the helm of Royce & Associates. The family's philanthropy prioritizes the Northeast, particularly Connecticut and New York. New York City organizations get some attention, but this funder also supports upstate New York, for instance in the Catskill region.

Arts is a priority. Royce's wife Deborah Goodrich Royce is a longtime actress and filmmaker on both coasts who once worked as a story editor for Miramax. These days, she is strongly involved with the Avon Theatre Film Center in Stamford, where she served as vice president for more than a decade, and recently assumed the role of president. The Royces actually helped restore the Avon last decade and continue to support Avon via their Royce Family Fund. Other film grantees include Film Society of Lincoln Center.

The Royces also earmark funds for the visual arts. Grantees include the Museum of Modern Art, the Met, and the Frick Collection, where Royce serves as a trustee. Preservation and historic sites are also important to this family. They support Flagler Museum in Palm Beach,  a 55-room mansion rooted in the Gilded Age, and Greenwich Historical Society. Last decade, the Royces purchased the historic Ocean House, a Victorian hotel in Rhode Island, slated for demolition, and rebuilt the structure.

In a recent tax year, the Royce Family Fund awarded around $5.4 million in grants. Quite a few grants are under $50,000, spread across a range of nonprofits. Unfortunately, because the charity keeps a low profile, a description of exactly what the Royces look for in their arts grantees is hard to come by.
