OVERVIEW: The Schooner Foundation’s international grants focus on human rights, peacebuilding, global security, and economic opportunity.

PROFILE: Established in 1996, the Schooner Foundation (formerly known as the Ryan Family Charitable Foundation) currently supports its grantmaking through the use of profits earned by the investment firm, Schooner Capital. Based in Boston, Schooner is a “[p]rogressive foundation focused internationally on human rights, peace & security and economic issues.” In the United States, the foundation focuses its grantmaking on “[p]rogressive media, campaign finance reform, the green economy, investigative reporting, and judicial reform.”
Schooner’s grant amounts range widely from $5,000 to $500,000; however, most grants fall in the $25,000 to $100,000 range. In the past, the foundation has awarded global health related grants to organizations such as Friends of Casa Materna, a nonprofit working to reduce maternal and infant death rates in the Matagalpa region in Nicaragua; and Tanzanian Children’s Fund, an organization improving education, increasing access to healthcare, and creating economic opportuneness in Tanzania.
