Every Mother Counts: Grants for Global Health

OVERVIEW: Every Mother Counts supports safe pregnancy and childbirth, and access to quality maternal healthcare in the U.S. and abroad.

IP TAKE: Every Mother Counts prioritizes local and grassroots groups over large international organizations.

PROFILE: Every Mother Counts (EMC) is a nonprofit organization established by model and social entrepreneur Christy Turlington Burns. Having suffered childbirth complications, Burns created EMC to bring increased awareness to global maternal health matters. Since its early days, the organization has “[e]volved into a 501(c)(3), investing in programs around the world to ensure all women have access to quality maternal healthcare.”

EMC continues to direct funds to its own advocacy and awareness programs but it also awards grants to support like-minded organizations operating in the U.S. and abroad. According to the foundation’s website, EMC is “[d]edicated to making pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother.”

Unfortunately, EMC's website does not offer information regarding how grantseekers may secure funding. Its latest tax filings also do not indicate whether or not it accepts grant applications or proposals. Given this lack of information, it is likely that EMC takes a proactive approach towards its grantmaking by seeking organizations with which it wants to work. EMC does not geographically restrict its grants, but it directs the majority of its awards to groups working in developing and least developed countries around the world, where the need is acute.

Grantseekers should reach out to EMC staff and introduce themselves.
