OVERVIEW: Kvinna till Kvinna supports more than 100 organizations per year that work to empower women in their personal, professional, and political lives. Global health services, especially for women, are one component of the foundation's funding priorities.
IP TAKE: This funder likes to work in international hotspots, including the most war-torn regions of the world. Kvinna till Kvinna is particularly supportive of small, local groups that fill service gaps in the absence of government or other alternative supports.
PROFILE: Based in Sweden, the Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation funds organizations working on women's rights and empowerment around the world. The phrase "kvinna till kvinna" translates from the Swedish to "woman to woman." The foundation supports organizations that increase women in politics, organize women in places where significant restrictions on female movement exist, incorporate women into peace and conflict-resolution decision-making, and generally secure women a seat at the proverbial table.
Of the foundation's six foci, its Power Over Ones Own Body supports global health concerns. In keeping with the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UNDHR), Kvinna believes that all people, regardless of gender, should have the right to decide when and where to reproduce in the face of obstructive forces; specifically, war, conflict, and government-sanctioned oppression. For instance, one of its grantees, Avangard, helps pregnant women in disputed areas of the Caucusus get basic prenatal care.
From a global health perspective, anything that puts more women in power is good, since female politicians tend to be more sympathetic regarding women’s health concerns. But helping women gain a seat in power is not the only thing that matters for women's well-being, and Kvinna till Kvinna is as interested in on-the-ground service work as it is in shifting the global levers of power.
Kvinna till Kvinna is not particularly forthcoming about its giving to individual grantees. However, tax filings reveal that the foundation awards grants to NGOs working all over the world. Kvinna till Kvinna emphasizes projects that occur in conflict areas where clinics and basic reproductive services are often forced to shut down, if they exist in the first place.
Kvinna till Kvinna does not post calls for proposals.
