McIntosh Foundation

OVERVIEW: The McInotsh Foundation makes grants related to education, youth, the arts, health, human services and religious causes.

IP TAKE: The foundation keeps a low public profile, which limits information available on its grantmaking priorities and activities. It does not appear to accept unsolicited proposals for funding.

PROFILE: The McIntosh Foundation was established in 1985 by Salomon Brothers veteran William A. McIntosh. McIntosh spent a long and distinguished career with Salomon Brothers and Salomon Smith Barney, serving for two decades as managing director and a member of the company's executive committee. He currently lives in Kenilworth, Illinois outside of Chicago. The McIntosh Foundation is currently steered by the financier and other family members who have ties to several parts of the country. The foundation does not maintain a website, which makes it difficult to locate further information on its priority areas and grantmaking strategies. Tax filings suggest that the McInotsh Foundation funds grantmaking related to education, youth, the arts, health, human services and religious causes.

McIntosh is on the board of Fairfield University in Connecticut, where he's both a parent and a grandparent, and supports the institution. He chairs Chicago Jesuit Academy, which he supports, as well as other Catholic and parochial institutions. McIntosh also appears to have an interest in the performing arts, particularly ballet; he's been involved with American Ballet Theatre for years and is a trustee and supporter.

Grants range from $5,000 to $20,000. In a recent fiscal year, the foundation gave away a little under $790,000. Past Chicago grantees include Epiphany School, Joffrey Ballet, Community of St. Sabina,  Northshore University Healthcare and Catholic Charities of Chicago.

The foundation keeps a low profile and does not accept proposals.
