Gelber Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Gelber Foundation awards grants related to education, youth, health, human services, animals, global and humanitarian causes and religious organizations.

IPTAKE: This foundation maintains a low profile and little is known about its grantmaking practices. It does not appear to accept unsolicited proposals for funding

PROFILE:  The Gelber Foundation was founded in 1986. It is steered by brothers Brian and Frank Gelber, who founded the Gelber Group in Chicago, a global leader in technology-driven trading with offices in the U.S. and England. The foundation does not maintain a website, which limits information on its grantmaking interests. Tax filings suggest that the Gelber Foundation primarily funds grantmaking related to education, youth, health, human services, animals, global and humanitarian causes and religious organizations.

The Gelbers steadily support the Daniel Murphy Scholarship Fund, which “provides four-year high school scholarships and educational support to economically disadvantaged Chicago high school students who demonstrate outstanding academic potential, leadership skills and strong character.” Gelber Group’s head of trading sits on the board of DMSF. The foundation spreads its money around to a range of causes, largely focusing on the Chicago area.

Grants range from $50 to $23,050. In a recent tax year, the foundation gave away around $223,000. Past grantees include Cristo Rey Jesuit High School, Northwestern Athletics, Circle of Health International, JCC Chicago, Saint Andrew Lutheran Church, Paws and Notre Dame Food Pantry.

The foundation keeps a low profile and does not accept unsolicited proposals. This funder’s phone number is (312) 247-7100
