PROFILE: The Jentes Family Foundation was established in 1988 and is based in Chicago. It was established by lawyer William R. Jentes and his wife, Janet. For about four decades, William was a principal litigating partner at Kirkland & Ellis, LLP, acting as lead trial and appellate counsel. The foundation does not maintain a website, which makes it difficult to locate further information on its priority areas and grantmaking strategies. Tax filings suggest that the Jentes Family Foundation funds grantmaking related to education, youth, health and the arts.
Janet serves on the board of Art Institute Chicago, which the couple supports. William, meanwhile, is on the board of Chicago Shakespeare Theater, another grantee.
Grants range from $500 to $100,000. In a recent fiscal year, the foundation gave away around $207,000. Past grantees include youth organization 826Chi, Ounce of Prevention, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Hyde Park Art Center and Facets Multi-Media, a media arts organization that aims to “preserve, present, distribute, and educate about film."
The foundation keeps a low profile and does not accept proposals.
