Grants for Education

The Barry Foundation’s education grantmaking aims to help students “receive a quality education throughout all stages of their development” and supports early childhood, K-12 and higher education initiatives. Early childhood and K-12 funding focuses mainly on New York, South Dakota and Haiti, while higher education grants support programs for colleges and universities across the U.S. Education grantees include the Inner-City Scholarship Fund, the Foundation for Excellence in Higher Education, Princeton University and Seizing Every Opportunity, a New York City organization that aims to “transform low-income public high school students into college graduates.”

Grants for Military and Veterans

Funding for veterans focuses on health care access. The foundation’s stated focus is “VA hospitals in Florida and New York.” However, according to recent tax filings, grants have supported a broader range of veterans’ organizations including the Veterans Consortium, an organization that provides legal assistance to veterans seeking compensation, and Guardian Revival, which trains dogs as companion and emotional support animals for veterans suffering with PTSD. The foundation has also funded cancer care centers at the James J. Haley Veteran’s Hospital in Tampa and the VA Bay Pines Health Care Center. Several years ago, the donated $2.5 million to the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) to establish the John and Daria Barry Precision Oncology Center of Excellence at the Manhattan Campus of the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System.

Grants for Environment, Marine and Freshwater Conservation

Environmental grantmaking represents a smaller portion of this foundation’s giving. The Barry Foundation’s works “on a local scale in the Northeast and Southeast U.S. to help remove pollution from local rivers, reservoirs, and bays.” Recently, grants have gone to Save the Sound in New York and Save the Bay, in Rhode Island.
