Charles and Seryl Kushner Charitable Foundation: New York City Grants

OVERVIEW: The Charles and Seryl Kushner Charitable Foundation is the philanthropic vehicle of real estate mogul Charles Kushner and family. The Kushner family's New York City grantmaking strongly involves supporting Jewish institutions. Other interests include education and health.

FUNDING AREAS: Jewish Causes, Education & Youth, Health, Human Services

IP TAKE: The foundation keeps a low profile and does not appear to accept unsolicited proposals.

PROFILE:  Charles Kushner turned a construction business started by his father into a private real estate empire, Kushner Companies. His son, Jared Kushner, now steers the company, as well as owns Observer Media. Jared Kushner is also married to Ivanka Trump who converted to Judaism.

The family is also involved in philanthropy, and moves their charitable contributions through the Charles and Seryl Kushner Charitable Foundation, which gave away around $1.5 million in a recent tax year. The Kushners strongly support Jewish organizations in New York, New Jersey, and far beyond. In New York, grantees have included Yeshiva University, Ramaz School, Manhattan Jewish Experience, Solomon Schechter School of Manhattan, Museum of Jewish Heritage, UJA Federation of New York, and Israel Cancer Research Fund.

Apart from Jewish organizations, the foundation's New York City grantmaking has also supported schools like Columbia University, CUNY Graduate School, NYC Outward Bound Schools, Weill Cornell Medical College, Pace University, Hunter College Foundation, Hofstra University, John Jay College Foundation, and NYU School of Law.

The Kushners have also supported health and human services outfits like Catholic Charities, and Eric Trump Foundation, which is "dedicated to raising money for terminally-ill children at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee."

Grants tend to be under $50,000 but a few far exceed that number. These handful of grantees tend to be Jewish organizations. This is a foundation that flies well under the radar and so information on exactly what the Kushners are looking for in their New York City grantees is hard to come by.
