Secunda Family Foundation: New York City Grants

OVERVIEW: The Secunda Family Foundation was created by Bloomberg LP co-founder Thomas Secunda and his wife Cindy. Much of its giving is focused in the greater New York area.

FUNDING AREAS: Environment, arts, education, Jewish causes

IP TAKE: The Secundas have been expanding their foundation's assets, along with their annual giving.

PROFILE: Bloomberg co-founder Thomas Secunda grew up on Long Island and went to Binghamton University before going to work on Wall Street. He and his wife Cindy signed the Giving Pledge in 2011, and now the Secunda Family Foundation appears to be ramping up, giving away several million dollars a year.

In a recent year, the funder gave out over $3.5 million and had assets of over $106 million.

The foundation is active in the New York City area and Secunda has served on several boards. He's been chairman of the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) in Washington D.C. NPCA has received the foundation's largest sums by far. In New York City, Secunda has also been also on the board of the Intrepid Museum Foundation and the Manhattan Theater Club.

The Intrepid Air, Sea and Space Museum on the Hudson River has received a steady stream of funding from the Secundas, receiving $300,000 one year. The Manhattan Theater Club, meanwhile, has received between $25,000 and $50,000 over the last few years and he's been honored at an annual gala by the club.

The Secundas have also supported organizations such as the Hudson Stage Company, the Jacob Burns Film Center, the Little Orchestra Society, and the Public Art Fund with smaller sums.

Secunda, Cindy and their daughters live in Croton-on-Hudson in Westchester County, where the Hudson Stage Company is located. Apart from supporting art in their suburban community, they've also given to the Croton-Harmon High Parent Teacher Association, the Croton-Harmon Education Foundation and Friends of Westchester County Parks.

Thomas Secunda is deep into the environment, and while the foundation's largest sums go to the NPCA, the Secundas have also supported local conservation efforts. They've been active in supporting conservation on Governor's Island, making gifts to the Governor's Island Alliance and the Regional Plan Association, which supports green spaces on Governor's Island, as well as in Orange County, New York and in the New Jersey Highlands. In addition, the Nature Conservancy and Scenic Hudson have seen Secunda money in recent years.

Secunda has also supported the Fund for the City of New York and the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City, though it's hard to say what will happen with this giving now that Michael Bloomberg is no longer mayor.

The foundation has also given to a select group of health outfits including the SLE Lupus Foundation and Jewish advocacy outfits such as the UJA Foundation and the American Joint Distribution Committee. The latter has been supported by the foundation since 2006.

Secunda himself has admitted that he's in the formative stages of his philanthropy. But he's taken cues from pals like Bloomberg and clearly has a few interests of his own, particularly the environment. We expect to see a steady increase in giving by this funder.
