Campbell Soup Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Campbell Soup Foundation gives in Camden, New Jersey and other cities and towns where its parent company maintains operations. It supports initiatives for access to healthy food and, to a lesser extent, community development.

IP TAKE: This corporate funder mainly support organizations that combat hunger and work towards equitable food access in the cities in towns where its parent company maintains operations. It does not accept applications, so contacting a local employee of the company will be the only way in here. Nonetheless, many small, community-based organizations that grow and distribute health food will find an audience here. To a lesser extend, the foundation supports community development in areas where its employees live and work.

PROFILE: Established in 1953, the Campbell Soup Foundation is the charitable arm of the global food company, Campbell Soup. The company, best known for its canned soup products, also produces snacks, beverages and prepared foods. The corporate foundation provides financial support to organizations that promote equitable access to food, healthy lifestyles and community development. While this funder works nationally in its areas of interest, it places a strong focus on its home state of New Jersey and other cities where its parent company maintains operations.

Grants for Food Systems

Access to healthy food and health initiatives related to nutrition and healthy lifestyle are at the core of the Campbell Soup Foundation’s work. In 2021, the foundation launched a $5 million signature program, Full Futures, which aims to improve school nutrition through support for improved cafeteria functioning, expanded school food services and “menu reformulation.” The program saw significant success in its pilot cities, Camden, New Jersey and Charlotte, North Carolina, and plans to expand to additional school districts by 2025. The Campbell Soup Foundation has also provided ongoing support to the Camden Food Security Collective and the Camden Food Fund. The foundation has also supported national food systems initiatives including Meals on Wheels America and Feeding America. Grantees operating in other areas of the country include Milwaukee’s Fondy Food Center, the Lamar County Food Pantry in Texas and Growing Gardens in Portland, Oregon.

Grants for Housing, Homelessness and Community Development

The Campbell Soup Foundation names “nurturing neighborhoods in communities where our employees live and work” as an area of interest, but its grantmaking for community development is a smaller area of giving. In the foundation’s hometown of Camden, the foundation has funded the St. Joseph’s Carpenter Society, the Lutheran Housing Corporation, Guadalupe Family Services and the Center for Environmental Transformation. Elsewhere, the foundation has supported Ohio’s Willard Hope Center, Pineville Neighbors Place in North Carolina and Respond, Inc., a Massachusetts organization that runs women’s shelters.

Important Grant Details

In a recent year, the Campbell Soup Foundation gave away about $1.4 million in grant that mostly ranged from $1,000 to $25,000. More than half of all grantmaking supports organizations that work to fight food insecurity and distribute food equitably to those in need. In addition to Camden, New Jersey, this funder prioritizes organizations serving the 30 cities and towns in the U.S. where it maintains operations. For additional information about past grants, see this funder’s recent tax filings.

While this funder does not accept unsolicited applications for funding, employees at any of Campbell Soup’s locations may nominate organizations to apply for grants. Submit general inquiries to the foundation by using the company’s contact page.
