FUNDING AREAS: Technology, education, literacy

IP TAKE: Nonprofits that are not already affiliated with this organization need not apply, but this is this is still an interesting funder to know in the Tri-State Area.

PROFILE: Established in 1973, the IEEE Foundation is a funder based in the state of New Jersey. The foundation’s initial role was to accept and administer donations for IEEE awards, but it has expanded its scope to award grants to projects now as well. These grants have been made possible by the Trusts of Alfred and Gertrude Goldsmith, Andrew Carnegie’s gift to establish the United Engineering Center, and the sale of that center to the IEEE Foundation in 1998. The foundation aims to enable “IEEE programs that enhance technology access, literacy, and education; supports the IEEE professional community; and inspires the generosity of donors.” Grantmaking includes technology, literacy, and education.

This foundation supports IEEE organizational units for projects that fit a certain theme each year. An example theme is “raising awareness and understanding of science and technology and their potential to address a global challenge.” Signature programs and priority initiatives typically involve immediate impact, long-term growth, intellectual capital, technological literacy, or human resources capacity. Overall, the funder supports education, including the history of technology and the profession of technology, as well as applying technology for the purposes of innovation and social impact.

Foundation grants range from $5,000 to $100,000. View a list of past grantees by year on the funder’s website. The foundation is based in Piscataway, New Jersey, and a portion of funding stays in this region and throughout the Tri-State Area. However, this is also a global funder that supports causes around the world. Foundation grants fund projects for no longer than 12 months.

The funder exclusively accepts applications from IEEE organizational units, which includes regions, sections, student branches, affinity groups, and major boards. In the past, the open application period has run from February to July. Grantseekers should direct general questions to the staff at 732-981-3435 or foundation-office@ieee.org.
