OVERVIEW: The J.E. & Z.B. Butler Foundation supports organizations that assist people with disabilities and youth development in the New York metro area and Boston.

FUNDING AREAS: People with disabilities, youth development

IP TAKE: All New York area nonprofits that work with children who have disabilities should familiarize themselves with the Butler Foundation.

PROFILE: Established in 1954, the J.E. & Z.B. Butler Foundation is a family foundation committed to New York and the Jewish community. Based in New York City, the foundation exists as the living legacy of Zella and Jack Butler. The couple had a daughter born with severe developmental disabilities, which continues to influence the foundation’s grantmaking today. The Butler Foundation supports “community-based organizations dedicated to improving the lives of people of all abilities in under-resourced communities.” Grantmaking includes work focused on people with disabilities and youth development.

Grants for Public Health and Access

Grants for disabilities focus on summer, after-school, and vacation and work readiness programs that help individuals with disabilities. The foundation also supports professional development for staff members who work with people who have disabilities. Meanwhile, youth development grants fund long-term summer and after-school programs for youth in underserved communities. These grants often fund mentoring programs, community involvement, internship opportunities and leadership skills development.

The funder usually awards grants for one-year periods, although it occasionally considers multi-year requests. However, Butler does not support educational institutions, religious organizations, capital campaigns, or research projects.
