IP TAKE: The foundation is not transparent and keeps a low public profile, which limits information available on its grantmaking priorities and activities. We have listed contact information below, so grantseekers can reach out, but networking may be the best bet.

PROFILE: The Ae Family Foundation was established in 1985. It was founded by biotechnology investor Anthony "Tony" B. Evnin and his wife Judith. Tony joined Venrock in 1974 and built the firm’s healthcare franchise, helping to shape the modern biotechnology industry. The foundation does not maintain a website, which makes it difficult to locate further information on its priority areas and grantmaking strategies. Tax filings suggest that the Ae Family Foundation funds grantmaking related to science and medical research, health, youth, and the arts.

Grants for Public Health and Access, Science Research, and Arts and Culture

Tony serves trustee of The Rockefeller University, home to the Anthony and Judith Evnin Professor. Venrock, in fact, was launched as the venture capital arm of the Rockefeller family. Tony Evnin is also a director of Bridge Medicines, an initiative recently launched by Rockefeller, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Weill Cornell Medicine, to advance drug discovery projects. The Evnins are strongly interested in advancing the translational efforts of the biomedical research community.

Past grantees include Jazz at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall (Judith is a trustee), Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts (Judith is a trustee), NY Genome Center, Planned Parenthood, Memorial Sloan Kettering (Tony is on the board), United Way of Greenwich, and Jackson Laboratory, "an independent, nonprofit biomedical research institution dedicated to contributing to a future of better health care based on the unique genetic makeup of each individual."
