PROFILE: Established in 1935, the Turrell Fund is Herbert and Margaret Turrell’s foundation for children in New Jersey. The fund is based in Montclair, New Jersey. This funder aims to “financially and strategically support organizations which directly provide or foster the creation and delivery of quality developmental and educational services to at-risk children, especially the youngest and their families, in Vermont and designated areas of New Jersey.” Grantmaking areas of interest include direct services to children, youth development, and at-risk children.

All foundation efforts center on disadvantaged and at-risk children. The Turrell Fund largely supports direct services but also considers capital requests as a second priority. A majority of grants go towards education and cultural programs with some funds going to advocacy and policy as well. The foundation has mostly been supporting programs that benefit children ages 0-5 lately.

In a recent year, the fund awarded over $4.6 million in grants, with more than $3.4 million of that going to education and cultural programs and more than $1.2 of it funding advocacy and policy. Grantseekers can view a summary of all recent grants dating back to 1935 on the funder’s website. Grantmaking prioritizes designated areas of New Jersey and the state of Vermont.

The Turrell Fund accepts unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits. In the past, the foundation has accepted new grant applications between January 1 and February 1 for the spring cycle and between July 1 and August 1 for the fall cycle. The funder requires nonprofits to wait at least a year before applying for a second grant. The funder utilizes an online application system. Grantseekers should get in touch with the foundation for general questions at 973-783-9358 or turrell@turrellfund.org. Send application questions to the staff at application@turrellfund.org.
