PROFILE: Established in 2013, the Catholic Foundation of Greater Philadelphia (CFGP) is an independent community foundation that is committed to philanthropy according to Jesus Christ’s teachings. It is based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and is the creation of a group of Philadelphia Catholics to award grants and help donors manage their charitable funds. The foundation "meets the diverse needs of donors and Catholic institutions through charitable fund management and development consulting.” It funds local efforts for religion, Catholic faith, health, basic needs, education, youth, conservation and preservation and faith-based outreach.

The Catholic Foundation of Greater Philadelphia awards grants to nonprofits that both align with the Catholic faith and are sustainable. It prefers to support projects that are already receiving funding from multiple sources. At times, CFGP has required applicants to be from or work on behalf of a parish. CFGP also set up an emergency relief fund in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. CFGP does not fund salaries but it will consider supporting capital improvement projects. Organizations should be in existence for at least three years to apply for a CFGP grant. Community impact awards do not have a formal granting process but are rather chosen by CFGP staff members.

Grants range between about $1,000 and $20,000. Learn more about this funder’s local giving by examining its recent tax records. Grantmaking focuses on the five-county greater Philadelphia area, including Philadelphia, Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties. Past local grantees include Gianna Center of Philadelphia, Deaf Apostolate Archdiocese of Philadelphia and Mercy Career and Technical High School.

This foundation accepts unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits. CFGP requests that organizations upload their application documents to a Dropbox folder that is linked on the funder’s website. Application deadlines are January 15 and July 15, and the funder responds to applications within 90 days of each deadline.
