FUNDING AREAS: Education & youth, health & human services, Jewish causes

PROFILE: Founded in 2006, the Donald T. Sterling Charitable Foundation was established by billionaire real estate mogul Donald Sterling and his wife Shelly. The foundation keeps a low public profile, though recent tax filings outline some of the foundation's priorities as well as grantmaking process. Donald Sterling began buying Southern California real estate, and his buy-and-hold strategy left him with large swaths throughout the area. In the early 1980s, he bought the San Diego Clippers, moving them to Los Angeles three years later. Sterling was secretly recorded making highly racist comments, and the NBA banned him for life.

The Donald T. Sterling Charitable Foundation's grantmaking primarily focuses on poverty, homelessness, education, and literacy for at risk children and families in Los Angeles and Southern California at large. The foundation also supports Jewish organizations.

In a recent year, the foundation gave away $120,000; the foundation has given away a handful of grants annually, of late. Grants are for general purpose. Past grantees include Teach for America Los Angeles, Yeshiva Gadolah, Temple of the Arts, and Black Business Association.

A recent tax filing indicates that the foundation accepts applications. Organizations are limited to one request per year and out of state requests will be denied, except for special circumstances.
