PROFILE: Established in 1987, the Goldrich Family Foundation was established by the late real estate mogul Jona Goldrich, a Holocaust survivor who co-founded the Goldrich Kest real estate firm in Los Angeles. The foundation is now steered by next generation family members, including his daughters Melinda Goldrich and Andrea Goldrich Cayton. The foundation does not maintain a website, which makes it difficult to locate further information on its priority areas and grantmaking strategies. Tax filings suggest the Goldrich Family Foundation primarily funds grantmaking related Jewish causes. It also earmarks funds for education and health.

Grants for Jewish Causes

Jewish causes represent the Goldrich Family Foundation’s largest giving area. The foundation does not name priorities for this giving, but grants have gone to a broad range of Jewish community and educational organizations in the U.S. and Israel. Israeli organizations have received the larger share of this giving over the past few years, with grants going to organizations including the Jewish Agency of Israel, Tel Aviv University, Friends of the Israel Defense Forces and the PEF Endowment Fund. Stateside, the foundation’s grantees include the Jewish Community Centers of Denver, Ramah in the Rockies camp programs and the Hillel at the University of California Los Angeles. The foundation has also supported the Friends of the Jewish Community Center of Krakow, which, in addition to supporting the Krakow Jewish community, has recently supported refugees of the war in Ukraine.

Grants for Public Health and Diseases

The Goldrich Family Foundation’s health grantmaking has mainly supported Los Angeles’s Cedars Sinai Medical Center, which receives ongoing support. In 2019, the foundation gave $10 million to establish the Jona Goldrich Center for Alzheimer's and Memory Disorders within the hospitals neurology department.

Grants for Education

Grantmaking for education has tapered off significantly in recent years, with the exception of support for Tel Aviv University in Israel. In years past, however, the foundation made grants to the Windward School in Los Angeles, the University of Pennsylvania and Wise Readers to Leaders, a Los Angeles-based organization supporting literacy and leadership development for children from underserved communities.

Grants for Arts and Arts Education

Arts and culture represent a much smaller area of giving for this funder, but a few grants have supported arts and arts education in Southern California and Colorado. Grantees include Aspen Films, Theater Aspen, the Music Center of Los Angeles and Santa Monica’s Portraits of Hope, which “conceives and develops one-of-a-kind motivational art projects that merge the production of dynamic public art works with creative therapy for hospitalized children and civic education for students of all ages.”
