PROFILE: Established in 1988, the Chartwell Charitable Foundation is the philanthropy vehicle of Jerry and Margaret Perenchio. Jerry Perenchio was born in Fresno, California and relocated to Los Angeles to attend UCLA. He was later involved in creating popular shows such as Maude, All in the Family, and Diff'rent Strokes and went on to co-promote the Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier fight as well as the Bobby Riggs/Billie Jean King "Battle of the Sexes" tennis match. In 1992, he purchased Univision Communications and sold his stake in 2007 for $1.3 billion. Based in Los Angeles, the foundation is overseen by Perenchio and his wife Margaret, a painter, who has painted the likes of Luciano Pavarotti. According to tax filings, the foundation invests predominately in the arts, education, and health.
The Chartwell Charitable Foundation directs its arts grantmaking largely to LACMA, among other Los Angeles-based cultural centers. The couple collects art and are said to own at least 47 works valued at $500 million. The normally private Perenchio stepped into the spotlight at the end of 2014 when he announced that he would be bequeathing his art collection to LACMA. The couple has also funded various other art organizations in Los Angeles including Geffen Playhouse, where Perenchio was a founding trustee, as well as Los Angeles Opera, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, MoCA, and Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Education grantmaking prioritizes a few select schools in Los Angeles including an all-girls private school, the Marlborough School, and Loyola High School. Past education grantees also include UCLA, P.S. Arts in Santa Monica.
Health grantmaking supports a handful of Los Angeles area hospitals including Cedars-Sinai, Women's Cancer Research Fund, and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Foundation, and various health organizations under the UCLA umbrella. The foundation maintains a broad approach to its health grantmaking; however, health grantmaking rarely exceeds $50,000 annually.
Finally, Perenchio is politically active, and sits on the board of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation in Simi Valley. He has given at least $50 million to various political campaigns, including supporting Former Governor Schwarzenegger and L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.
