PROFILE: The Eugene and Marilyn Stein Family Foundation was established in 1997. Its was founded by financier Eugene Stein and his wife Mindy, who's worked as a speech therapist. Eugene Stein is the former vice chairman and director of Capital Strategy Research, a unit of the Capital Group Companies, a global investment management company.  The foundation lacks transparency and does not maintain a website, which makes it difficult to locate further information on its priority areas and grantmaking strategies. Last decade, the couple founded the Tikun Olam Foundation, a support foundation at the Jewish Community Foundation of Los Angeles. Tikun Olam means "healing the world" in Hebrew. The foundation seeks to help vulnerable children by providing support to both the child and family, with a primary focus on promoting early childhood mental health and the prevention of child abuse. Via the Tikun Olam Foundation, the Steins made a $1 million gift to establish the Stein Tikun Olam Infant-Family Mental Health Initiative at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). Eugene Stein also once chaired the board of Pitzer College in Claremont, California and the couple have steadily supported the liberal arts college.

Past grantees include Los Angeles Opera (Stein is a director); Pasadena Conservancy of Music; Alliance College Ready Public Schools; Flintridge Preparatory School and La Canada Flintridge Educational Foundation (The couple's kids attended La Canada Flintridge public schools and Flintridge Prep); Union Station Foundation (Mindy was once vice chair); Huntington Hospital; and California Community Foundation, which has received 7-figure funds annually of late.
