Steven Gordon Family Foundation

OVERVIEW: This funder is the philanthropic organization of businessman Steven Gordon and family. The foundation's Los Angeles grantmaking supports Jewish causes, health, and youth outfits.

IP TAKE: The foundation lacks transparency, with no clear guidelines for grant seekers. However, it appears to accept unsolicited proposals, but without a website or a clear way for grantseekers to reach out, it does not make it easy to do so.

PROFILE: The Steven Gordon Family Foundation was founded by Steven C. Gordon, chairman of Domino Realty and former economics major at UCLA. Gordon is also active in civic life and has served on the board of such institutions as Cedars-Sinai Hospital, and the United Jewish Federation, where he was once vice chair. The Gordon Family foundation supports Jewish institutions, education and health grantmaking across Los Angeles.

Grants for Jewish Causes, Education, and Public Health and Access

Through his foundation, Gordon supports the local Los Angeles Jewish community. Grantees have included Chabad of Westwood, Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust, Jewish Education Trade School, and Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles, which has received especially large grants. As well, Gordon's company is headquartered in Beverly Hills and his family foundation has given some of its largest grants to City of Beverly Hills Community Charitable Foundation. Gordon has also supported Beverly Hills Unified School District. The foundation funds health organizations across Los Angeles.

Education and youth grantmaking, apart from UCLA, have funded Palms Middle School, Vista Del Mar Child and Family Services, Exceptional Children's Foundation, and The Help Group, which serves "children, adolescents and young adults with special needs related to autism spectrum disorder, learning disabilities, ADHD, developmental delays, abuse and emotional challenges." Several of these organizations are engaged in children's mental health.

Past grantees include Cedars-Sinai Medical Center; Children's Hospital Los Angeles, and Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research, among others have also been funded. Gordon also made a $25 million grant to the Department of Neurology in the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA to establish the Steven C. Gordon Family Chair in Parkinson’s Disease Research. The forces here are personal, as Gordon's father was afflicted with the disease.

Important Grant Details

Most foundation grants are under $50,000. Annual grantmaking recently has been around $1 million.  While it appears to accept unsolicited proposals, it does not provide a clear way for grantseekers to submit a funding request.
